Unique Risks When You're at the Helm

Bareboat charters put you in full control — and full responsibility. Here's what can go wrong and how the right insurance protects you.

Skipper Can't Travel

If you're the qualified skipper and can't make the trip due to illness or injury, the entire charter is off. Standard travel insurance may not recognize this as a covered reason — but specialized policies do.

Security Deposit Liability

Bareboat security deposits can run $2,000–$10,000+. If the yacht is damaged during your charter, you're on the hook. Deposit protection coverage limits your financial exposure.

Weather Cancellations

A week of 30+ knot winds means you're stuck in the marina. Standard trip cancellation only covers named storms. CFAR coverage lets you cancel for any weather concern and recover up to 75%.

Medical Emergencies in Remote Locations

Without a crew, you're managing everything — including emergencies. Getting from a small island clinic in the BVI or Greece to a major hospital can cost $50,000+. Make sure you're covered up to $250,000.

Mechanical Breakdown

Engine failure, rigging issues, or electrical problems can cut your charter short. Trip interruption coverage helps recoup costs for days lost to mechanical issues beyond your control.

Charter Company Issues

What if the charter company goes bankrupt or can't provide the boat you booked? Supplier default coverage protects your prepaid costs if the company fails to deliver.

What to Look for in a Bareboat Charter Policy

Trip cost coverage high enough for your charter.
Many policies cap at $10,000–$25,000. For bareboat charters, you likely need $25,000–$100,000+ in coverage.
Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) add-on.
Essential for charter trips. Must be purchased within 14–21 days of your initial deposit. Reimburses up to 75%.
Emergency medical evacuation ($250K+).
Evacuation from remote charter destinations to a major medical facility isn't cheap. Make sure your policy covers at least $250,000.
No offshore sailing restrictions.
Some policies exclude coverage once you're offshore. Make sure your policy covers sailing activities without distance-from-shore limitations.
